Cobequid Lawn Bowls Club invites Truro folks to try their gentle sport (from 2019)

The Cobequid Lawn Bowls Club is running the two game days aimed at beginners over the next two weeks. Players in Truro will have coaches on hand to teach beginners the proper game techniques on May 29 at the Local Try Bowls Open House. This will be followed by a National Bowls Day event in Truro on June 8, one of many across Canada. The club will also run a display at the Farmers Market on June 1. “Lawn Bowls provide a relaxed social atmosphere and the game is assessable to practically all ages,” said club member Brian Sears in an email. “It is not physically demanding, yet provides a challenge.” The May 29 open house runs from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. National Bowls Day on June 8 runs from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Both game sessions will be at the Cobequid Lawn Bowls Club’s headquarters in the Douglas Street Recreation Centre, on 40 Douglas Street. They can be found at the back of the building. The first three games are free for new members. The fee for full membership is just $125.00 per season. As well as coffee league games, people can enjoy league evenings and drop-in practice times. Coffee League games currently run on Mondays and Fridays at 1:30 p.m. The time will switch to 9:30 a.m. in July once the weather warms up. Donnachie to represent NS at national triples championship next summer

TRURO DAILY NEWS – August 11, 2014

TRURO – Chris Donnachie added further proof to the adage it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.  After dropping their first game at the Nova Scotia triples lawn bowls championship during the weekend, Donnachie and Cobequid teammates Jim Granville (lead) and Dale Kidd (second) rhymed off four straight wins to capture the provincial title in Dartmouth. “It feels good,” Donnachie, of Hilden, said of winning the provincial crown. After losing their first game on Saturday, Donnachie and his mates won their final two games of the day to advance to Sunday’s final against previously unbeaten Ed Yeazel of Dartmouth.

Needing to beat Yeazel twice, Donnachie took the first game 23-9 to set up a one-game showdown, which the Cobequid bowlers took 18-9. In both games, Donnachie rallied from a 9-2 deficit en route to victory.

“The main reason we won is that it was a strong team effort,” said Donnachie. “The three of us, we played as a unit and we get along good together, so I think that was a key thing.”

Making Donnachie’s feat even more special is the fact that members of the team are relative newbies to the game. Donnachie started playing just last year, while Granville, of Truro, and Kidd, of Halifax, each have a couple of years experience under the belts.

Donnachie said his team entered the five-team provincial tournament for the experience of competing against top-level bowlers.

“There was nobody more surprised than us down there that we won, I’ll tell you that,” laughed Donnachie.

The Donnachie team will represent Nova Scotia at the Canadian championship next summer in Ontario.

“We’re looking forward to that – going to the nationals,” said Donnachie.
